Business Spotlight: Skyline Chiropractic - Dr. Rai’an Harris

We got a chance to get up close and personal with Dr. Rai of Skyline Chiropractic this month, to get some insight into her business and home life.  She shares how her company got started, why she wanted to own her own practice, advice for women in business and more.  Keep reading to learn more.

1. First things first, how did Skyline Chiropractic come into existence? I had honestly been thinking about having my own office since I was in grad school. I figured I could work to build someone else's practice, or I could work to build my own! It's been super rewarding, frustrating, and ultimately a crazy process, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Our name actually comes from the way I wanted people to feel when they come into our office. For me, skylines always equal a destination. They symbolize that we've finally made it to where we're going. In our office, I want people to feel that way about their health.

2. Are you originally from Chattanooga? If not, where are you from and what brought you to Chatt? I'm originally from St. Louis, MO. Chiropractic is really amazing in that its so underutilized, so you can have a thriving business just about anywhere. When my husband and I were looking at where we wanted to open our office, we wanted to find a place that we really loved and where we could see ourselves raising kids. We stopped in on our way to a wedding and absolutely loved it. By about the 3rd time we came back, we decided that this would be our new home!

3. Tell me a little bit about Skyline Chiropractic and everything it offers. Are there any upcoming events to note? Skyline Chiropractic is a very specialized chiropractic office. We are usually the exact opposite of what people think of when they hear the word "chiropractor". We actually don't do any twisting, cracking, or popping. Our adjustments are not for "feeling better" although that's usually an amazing side effect :). People tend to see us for all kinds of things that are typically unrelated to chiropractic. Speaking of our population, that's also pretty specialized. We are a preconception, prenatal, and pediatric office. Most of the time, people are coming to see us for fertility issues that they want to heal naturally, they're pregnant, or they have kids that need assistance. Events to note include us having our second baby! We're a family practice so my husband is our office manager and you'll frequently see our daughter in the office. I also partner with other moms that own businesses and we do a monthly networking events for moms that own businesses! Its every 4th Monday of the month at 7:30 at STIR downtown!

4. As a working mom, how do you balance running a business and your personal life? Haha, what personal life? Just kidding, my husband is actually a huge help in this. Having a supportive partner makes all of the difference. We have rules at home like no business talk in the bedroom, which helps us mindset shift at the end of a long day. We also are very specific in telling each other when we're done working for the day to encourage the other person to do the same and switch to a "home" mindset rather than a "business" one. Basically for us, since we can work at home and at the office, mindset is very important. It is important for us to know where our headspace is at any point in time.

5. Any advice for women wanting to start a company or wanting to get into the chiropractic world? My biggest advice is just do it. You are never going to be prepared for everything and even the best laid plans fail. So just do it! Jump into that business, ask for funding, give it a shot. If you do, you're guaranteed to learn something at minimum. If you don't, you'll just be exactly where you are right now. So if it’s on your heart, do it!
